Fans have been busy speculating the setting for upcoming Assassin's Creed Codename HEXE, and all signs appear to be pointing toward witch trials.

On Sept 10, Ubisoft Forward confirmed the long-rumored Assassin's Creed Mirage, the next main entry into the RPG series. Set to take place in 9th century Baghdad, the story focuses on Basim Ibn Is'haq, a character first introduced in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The game is reported to be set 20 years prior to the events of Valhalla.

Aside from the next main entry, Ubisoft also gave fans a glimpse at upcoming future games, including Assassin's Creed Codename RED which will be set in Japan, followed by Assassin's Creed Codename HEXE. While the setting for the latter has yet to be confirmed, fans have already been picking apart the trailer to uncover its secrets.

The biggest clue to the game's setting is in its current placeholder name. The word "hexe" can be directly translated from German to English as "witch". The imagery present in the trailer also presents the logo in a wicker-style object, with various runes flickering around it which fans have linked to the Alphabet of the Magi.

Translated by Game Pressure, the Alphabet of the Magi writing appears to spell out a German phrase: “We work in the dark to serve the light,” one which Assassin's Creed fans will be all too familiar with.

All of these hints combine seem to make the the Würzburg witch trials a likely setting for the upcoming game. Or at the very least, Germany around that time period. This spooky new setting would certainly be a new step for the franchise, and one plenty of fans are no doubt looking forward to.
