Blizzard devs have answered the question which has been on nearly every Overwatch player's mind — Overwatch 2 will be taking over from Overwatch once it launches.

Speaking in a Reddit AMA, the development team behind Overwatch 2 were around to answer the community's questions surrounding the upcoming game. One user took the chance to ask the team what Overwatch 2's early access launch this October will mean for the future of the original Overwatch.

"We’re using the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the start of many new things coming to the game. We’re launching with new heroes, maps and features, but there are even more of these coming seasonally – every 9 weeks," the dev reply read. "We recently released a roadmap detailing some of this content, with a new hero coming in Seasons 1 and 2, and a new map in Season 2."

The team ended the answer by saying, "when OW2 launches on Oct 4th it will be a replacement for the current Live Service."

From this it's safe to assume that the original Overwatch will be rendered somewhat obsolete once the sequel launches, and it makes sense. Aside from being free-to-play, meaning no-one will face a barrier from accessing the game, Blizzard has made a point of moving all of its Overwatch resources over to the development of Overwatch 2.

While this might be a worry for die-hard fans of the original, it's been confirmed that content such as currencies and loot will transfer over to Overwatch 2 when it launches.

Overwatch 2 launches on Oct 4, 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows.
