Atlanta Braves ace Max Fried has taken a big step in his rehab by facing hitters as he inches closer to returning to the rotation from a forearm strain.

The Atlanta Braves have been missing their ace since Max Fried hit the injured list in early May with a strained left forearm. The latest update on him is encouraging, although it will be a little longer before he makes his return to MLB action.

Fried brings immense value to the rotation. Before going on the IL in May, the lefty made five starts. He had a 2.08 ERA through those five games with a 2-1 record and 25 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched. He finished the 2022 season with a 14-7 record, a 2.48 ERA and 170 strikeouts.

Max Fried takes a big step by facing live hitters

Fried has taken a promising step in his rehab. He resumed throwing and has progressed to facing live hitters. His return to facing hitters went well. The Braves will see how he feels afterward, and then they'll move forward with a schedule for him.

While there's no timetable for a rehab assignment, it shouldn't be far off. Fried is expected to return to the majors not long after the All-Star break. He could be back in the rotation by late July or early August.

The Braves are also without Kyle Wright in their rotation. Wright has been on the IL with a shoulder injury. Despite missing Fried and Wright, the rotation has been strong, and the bullpen has been steady.

Atlanta is currently first in the NL East, up seven games over the Marlins. In addition to stellar pitching, their offense has been on fire. The NL East has reason to fear, as the return of Fried will make the Braves even stronger.

It shouldn't be long before Fried progresses to the next step of his rehab. Once he completes a rehab assignment, he'll be back in the rotation. Braves fans eagerly await Fried's return.
