The Chicago Sky's coaching staff is undergoing some changes as James Wade shocked the WNBA by leaving the team midseason.

Chicago Sky general manager and head coach James Wade is leaving the WNBA for the NBA after being hired by the Raptors as an assistant coach, the team announced on Saturday afternoon. Wade joins the staff of new Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic, who was hired by the team last month.

Emre Vatansever, who has been with the Sky since 2017, has been named interim general manager and head coach effective immediately.

James Wade leeft a major mark on Chicago Sky history as GM, coach

James Wade served as an assistant in the WNBA for the San Antonio Stars and the Minnesota Lynx before being hired by the Sky in 2019. Wade made one of the most significant acquisitions in WNBA free agency history when he signed Candace Parker to a two-year contract. The move paid instant dividends as the Sky won its first WNBA title in 2021. During Wade's time in Chicago, he coached the Sky to an 81-59 record and was 13-8 in the playoffs.

Last month, Wade openly discussed the future of the franchise, which included the potential development of a new practice facility in Chicago. In previous discussions, he stated that he planned to be with the Sky as long as the organization wanted him. Wade seemed focused on bringing the city of Chicago another WNBA championship, especially after his aggressive offseason trade for Marina Mabrey this offseason.

"The Chicago Sky's mission has always been to elevate and celebrate our world-class athletes and staff, and James' tremendous achievement is another exciting indicator of the WNBA's incredible growth and recognition of our outstanding coaches and players who continue to reach new heights," per Chicago Sky PR. "The Chicago Sky are committed to a seamless transition and successful 2023 season, and we will continue to build on our championship culture by making important investments in the Chicago Sky organization this season and for many years to come."

The Chicago Sky are currently in sixth place in the standings with a 7-9 overall record.

NOTE: Kahleah Copper was announced as an All-Star reserve shortly after the news of James Wade's departure to the NBA.
