Square Enix has announced that Chocobo GP will not be receiving any more major content updates after Season 5, despite only launching in March this year.
The company posted the announcement to their support page, saying, "Thank you for playing “Chocobo GP”. Season 5 will be the last season where prize pass levels are used in the Chocobo GP mode."
The mobile game will still be available to play after Season 5, however rankings will continue without prize pass levels, and there will be no large scale updates, such as new characters or new maps after Season 5. The last update was rolled out yesterday, on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022.
Sales of the game's premium currency, Mythril, were discontinued along with the update. Mythril that players own will still can still be used in the Mythril Shop during Season 5 and beyond. However, all Mythril will become "invalid" on 00:00 01/06/2023 (JST). The shop itself will also disappear at this time.
Square Enix has announced that no refunds will be given for purchased Mythril and encourages players to use up any left over before the expiration date.
Chocobo GP came under fire after its release in March, with fans expressing their disappointment over the game's extensive use of microtransactions despite not being a free-to-play game.
The game does feature a free Lite version, though only offers players a limited selection of characters, with no way to earn or purchase more without buying the full-price game. The studio acknowledged fan disappointment and offered players 500 Mythril for free as an apology.
