Real Madrid midfielder insists he will not be betting on how many goals he'll score this season with manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Last season, Ancelotti and Valverde shook hands on a wager that meant that if the midfielder didn't bag ten goals during the 2022/23 campaign Ancelotti would give up his coaching licence.

Luckily for everyone involved, during the 2022/23 season Valverde went on to score an impressive 12 goals in all competitions - twice as many as he'd scored in any of his previous four seasons at the club combined.

The dynamic Uruguayan international got off the mark for this season in the win over Real Sociedad at the weekend, scoring a typically brilliant goal in the 47th minute after latching onto a clever pull-back cross from Fran Garcia.

After bagging his first goal, Valverde was asked by Relevo if he's going to repeat his wager with Ancelotti about bagging double figures once again, replying: "Until I score a couple of goals, I’m not going to bet anything. If not, I'll be in hot water.

"I try to contribute however I can. When you score goals it helps you work harder. To be more motivated."

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo following the win over Real Sociedad at the newly-refurbished Santiago Bernabeu, Valverde also discussed the injury he is currently playing through.

"I suffered a fracture in training, in a duel," he revealed. "I went to grab another teammate and my hand got caught. It hurts, but I can play and that’s the important thing."

Valverde will be back in action this midweek when Real Madrid face off against Champions League debutants Union Berlin.
