Manchester United have assigned the newly vacant number 11 shirt to summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, while Alejandro Garnacho has also been handed a new jersey even though the 2023/24 season has already started.
Hojlund joined United from Atalanta at the start of August in a deal that could eventually reach £72m when add-ons come into play. He was presented to the Old Trafford crowd ahead of the pre-season friendly against Lens, but the 20-year-old was carrying a pre-season injury at the time and so wasn’t actually given a shirt number as the remainder of the transfer window unfolded.
It was thought that, once Fred left United to join Fenerbahce, Hojlund would inherit the number 17 from the Brazilian midfielder as it was the same jersey he had previously worn for Atalanta.
Instead, 17 now belongs to Garnacho after making his name wearing 49 during a breakout 2022/23. A popular player, that news will come as a blow to fans who have already bought this season’s shirts with what is now his old number on the back.

Hojlund was able to take 11 because of Mason Greenwood’s departure on loan to Getafe following the club’s eventual decision for him to continue his career elsewhere.
United have additionally confirmed that new back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will wear the number one shirt. When David de Gea left Old Trafford at the end of June, new starting goalkeeper Andre Onana chose not to take that shirt and opted for 24 because it is more personal to him.
New left-back Sergio Reguilon, signed on loan from Tottenham, will take 15, while returning veteran centre-back Jonny Evans gets 35, which also happens to be his age.
No number for Sofyan Amrabat, who was the last player through the door on deadline day, has been confirmed as yet. That shirt will only be revealed once his registration is fully complete.
