Mauricio Pochettino has defended Chelsea's transfer policy, admitting he was aware of the plans for the squad before he joined the club.

Under the stewardship of new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea have gone on an unprecedented spending spree in the last three transfer windows, breaking the British transfer fee record on two occasions while spending almost £950m on new players.

The large majority of players signed by the Blues have been youngsters who have been given long-term deals at Stamford Bridge.

In an interview with Sky Sports, manager Pochettino was asked about the policy of signing young players and whether the lack of veterans in the squad is currently an issue: "They presented the project of the club, with players in and players out. When I accepted, I accepted knowing what was going to happen in the squad.

"It's about having the right balance. We have young players but with experience and quality. It's not a big issue."

Pochettino also took time to discuss Chelsea's British record signing of Moises Caicedo. The Blues spent £113m on the young midfielder, but fans were disappointed with his Premier League debut for the club against West Ham - a game in which Caicedo gave away a penalty kick.

The manager, however, keen to praise Caicedo, adding: "I never worked with [N'Golo] Kante but he [Caicedo] is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

"He has some similar characteristics to Kante but Moises is still young and needs to work really hard to improve in different areas. But he has the potential to be one of the best."

Pochettino will be keen to get his first win as Chelsea manager when the Blues take on Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Friday evening.
