Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last month’s attempted mutiny by Wagner mercenaries failed because the country’s armed forces “remained true to their oath.”

In his first public comments on the uprising, Shoigu told officers at a meeting broadcast on state television that the “attempt to destabilize the situation in Russia” had not affected military operations in Ukraine.

Russia earlier launched a barrage of 17 Iranian-made drones across southern, eastern and central regions of Ukraine, 13 of which were shot down, according to Ukraine’s air-defense force. In Sumy near the Russian border, two people were killed and 19 injured, the regional governor’s office said on Telegram.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive has meanwhile liberated an area of about 160 square kilometers (62 square miles) in the south from occupation, according to Hanna Malyar, a deputy defense minister. Malyar reported “fierce fighting” in the east and said Russian troops are advancing in four areas there.
